The President of Honduras has threatened to close a US military base in her country if Trump proceeds with his plan for “the largest mass deportation operation in American history.”
In a speech made on New Year’s Day, Xiomara Castro said Honduran migrants should not be subject to “unnecessary reprisals,” and warned that if they were, US military bases in the country would “lose all reason to exist.”
“Faced with a hostile attitude of mass expulsion of our brothers, we would have to consider a change in our policies of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military arena, where, without paying a cent for decades, they maintain military bases in our territory, which in this case would lose all reason to exist in Honduras,” Castro said.
“We hope that the new U.S. administration of democratically elected President Donald Trump will be open to dialogue, constructive and friendly, and will not take unnecessary reprisals against our migrants, who normally make a great contribution to the U.S. economy,” she added.
The main US military presence in Honduras comes through Soto Cano Air Force Base, a Honduran military base that hosts between 500 and 1,500 US military personnel.
US military personnel in Honduras are part of Joint Task Force Bravo, which is tasked with humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, anti-narcotics work and regional security cooperation.
In contrast to President Castro’s remarks, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said she is now prepared to cooperate with Trump’s deportations and even to host foreign nationals on Mexican soil.
“We can collaborate through different mechanisms,” she said during her daily press briefing.
“There will be time to speak with the United States government if these deportations really happen, but we will receive them here, we are going to receive them properly and we have a plan.”
Sheinbaum had until recently refused to confirm that her government would cooperate with Trump’s plan for the “largest mass deportation operation in American history.”
Last week, the Mexican government announced it was creating an app that will allow migrants to inform family members and local consulates if they think they are about to be detained in the US.
